What Is Donor Egg Or Egg Donation?

Donor egg or egg donation offers individuals and couples with poor quality or diminished numbers of eggs an excellent chance of becoming pregnant. Through egg donation, a donor’s mature eggs are collected, fertilized with sperm (usually from the male intended parent or with anonymous donor sperm), and implanted into the uterus of the intended mother. In some cases, the pregnancy will be carried by a gestational carrier, where the embryo is transferred to the uterus of a surrogate who will carry the pregnancy to term.

Using Donor Egg to Build Your Family

For many couples and individuals, using donor eggs provides a viable solution for infertility issues related to egg quality or quantity. Donor eggs are also a popular choice for older patients, same-sex couples, single parents, and those facing specific types of infertility, such as diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure. Additionally, LGBTQ+ couples, particularly male couples, often use donor eggs in conjunction with gestational surrogacy to build their families.

If you are using donor eggs for your pregnancy and plan to carry the pregnancy yourself, you must be healthy and have a normal uterus. You must also be able to complete your treatment cycle and embryo transfer before age 55.
