What is Artificial Insemination?
A quick and painless procedure, artificial insemination involves a physician inserting sperm into a woman’s uterus or cervix. In doing so, the sperm has a shorter distance to travel with fewer obstructions along the way. The most commonly used form of artificial insemination, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is when the physician inserts the sperm directly into the uterus. After a physical examination and bloodwork from both partners is complete, a sperm sample is collected. The sperm are then washed and concentrated to ensure a higher chance of conception. Next, during the artificial insemination procedure, the sperm sample is placed into the uterus using a catheter a syringe. Artificial insemination is a great solution for individuals and couples dealing with infertility.
